Music and Gender

As I talked about in my last blog entry, I explained how I really love Bad Bunny’s music. The main reason behind this is because of how it promotes my culture. His music is considered to be in the reggaeton genre. In this genre, most of the Spanish-speaking rappers are all men, such as Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, and much more. There are really not many Latina women that are rappers. You find most women singing more classic genres, such as salsa or merengue. However, recently, there have been more females that have become very popular, such as Karol G, Rosalía, and Young Miko. Young Miko is one that I really enjoy because she is from Puerto Rico and has featured in one of Bad Bunny’s songs. It is interesting how I am usually introduced to these female rappers from being featured in different songs. The song that I embedded is where Bad Bunny featured Young Miko. Hopefully, in the near future, I will be able to go to one of her concerts. I do not see a major difference in how the media treats these artists, but I definitely see more hype and fame towards the male rappers.

As far as gender expectations in my own personal life, I find that women my age are often expected to only listen to solely female artists, such as Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and much more. While I feel that this can be somewhat true, this is not always the case. I think people think this about girls because they want to listen to more songs about love or simply to just support other females. This is not always true, and I have a lot of friends who listen to a variety of genres with different artists. I think a lot of people believe that boys our age listen to primarily rap by male artists. What I have learned growing up is that there are so many different music genres and styles that people enjoy, regardless of their gender or background history. In addition, I have found that I enjoy listening to many genres that include different artists. One of the artists I have grown to like is Brent Faiyaz. His songs are really relaxing and soothing. His songs are mostly in the R&B genre, which is a genre that I have grown to like and explore more artists, such as Giveon, Frank Ocean, and much more.

  1. I listened to both of these songs, and I liked them both which is very surprising to me! I'm not a fan of Bad Bunny and have never listened to Brent Faiyaz, but these songs are really great! Also, I totally understand what you're talking about. It's very rare to see a female rapper, so it's always a nice surprise to see one featured in one of your favorite artist's songs. Of the two songs you posted, I definitely enjoyed Talk 2 U the most. I loved the beat on FINA, but I loved the vibes more on the second song. I was tapping my foot and everything. Thank you for the amazing song choices!

  2. Hi Emmy, your post is really good! I am personally a bad bunny fan as well. Your song choice is really good and I listened to that song quite a lot. However, I feel like there’s a few better ones from him. I wanted to say as well that Brent Faiyaz kinda surprise me a lot. You can tell he is really good by listening to the sling you added, I would for sure start listening to him. And about your own experience with gender and music I feel like you’re right! I feel like mostly boys listen to boys and girls listen to girls, but people started changing that behavior and in the present it is very mixed.

  3. I absolutely love Brent Faiyaz, Giveon, and Frank Ocean. Those are a lot of artists that got me through the COVID era. I have also started to listen to Bad Bunny and other Latin artists because many of my teammates are Spanish speaking, and I always love the songs! I'm glad that in the past few years female rappers have become more popular!

  4. Hey Emmy, we were definitely on the same page in reference to your inclusion of Brent Faiyaz. Him and Giveon give off the same type of vibes I think and as I mentioned in my blog he is one of my favorite artists. I’ve never really listened to his songs only some of the main stream ones but you have encouraged me to check out more of his other music.

  5. I find your love for Bad Bunny and his promotion of your culture through reggaeton really interesting, especially since it connects you to artists like Young Miko, who is also from Puerto Rico. It's great how you've discovered more female rappers through their collaborations with him, and I like how you're excited to see these artists grow in popularity. I also really liked your mention of Brent Faiyaz which is different than Bad Bunny. Both Bad Bunny and Brent Faiyaz represent different but meaningful parts of your musical journey.

  6. Hi Emmy, the artists you spoke about are definitely influential in today's music industry and I am for one a fan, the way they make songs and how much of a vibe they are is something I love listening to them, every time I hear one of their songs it instantly brings up the vibe which is great when sometimes you need it. Great post!
